The ‘International Association for Comparative Semitics’ (IACS) was founded in Barcelona on 20 November 2004. Its objectives are to act as a debate forum for specialists in the field of Comparative Semitics and to promote this type of investigation based on international cooperation. The most relevant public activities undertaken by the IACS consist of organizing an international conference every two years and to publish the corresponding proceedings. The first conference was held in Barcelona in 2004 (published at: Aula Orientalis 23, 2005), the second was held in Sitges in 2006 (published: Aula Orientalis 26 2008), the third took place in Cuneo (Italy; publication of proceedings forthcoming). A specific topic is the subject of debate at each conference.
The fourth conference of the IACS will be held in Zaragoza from 9 to 11 June 2010, organized by the Instituto de Estudios Islámicos y del Oriente Próximo (IEIOP) and the Área de Estudios Árabes e Islámicos of the University of Zaragoza. The chosen topic for debate at this conference is ‘Dialectology of the Semitic Languages’. Participants include scholars from Britain, Estonia, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and USA. The proceedings of the conference will be published by the Instituto de Estudios Islámicos y del Oriente Próximo.
The Organizing Committee of the conference is formed by Federico Corriente (Professor University of Zaragoza), Christophe Pereira (Researcher CSIC - IEIOP), Ángeles Vicente (Lecturer University of Zaragoza, IEIOP) and Juan-Pablo Vita (Tenure Scientist CSIC - IEIOP).
